Ernst Lubitsch hand picked Portland (born and raised) violinist Louis Kaufman to set the mood for Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald in The Merry Widow. When they called Kaufman to offer him the job, he turned it down flat because he had heard that studio musicians worked long hours. They offered to pay him twice union scale, and he reconsidered.
I hereby claim The Merry Widow (1934) as an Oregon film on the basis of Louis Kaufman’s contribution on the soundtrack.
