Early on in his career, James Ivory took the precaution of making such wildly eccentric films that he and Ismail Merchant would never have to waste a single minute worrying about being pigeonholed. In The Wild Party, Ivory cast Raquel Welch opposite James Coco in a musical based on a poem. This is courage, my friends.
The poem, written in the 1920’s by John Moncure March, was inspired by the Fatty Arbuckle scandal.
Please note- while Hollywood was sending John Wayne up to Oregon to shoot a Western, Oregon was sending James Ivory down to Southern California to shoot an orgy.
I hereby claim The Wild Party as an Oregon film, as I will all of James Ivory’s films, whether they star Raquel Welch or not.
