Oregon stands in for Illinois in this biopic, which had the misfortune to come out on the heels of John Ford’s vastly superior Young Mr. Lincoln.
Based on the Broadway play of the same name, Abe Lincoln In Illinois starred Raymond Massey as young Abe and Ruth Gordon as Mary Todd. It was shot in and around Eugene.
This is the movie to see if you always wondered what Abraham Lincoln saw in Mary Todd. Ruth Gordon is unsparing in her portrayal of Todd as a plain, perceptive, ambitious woman who always thought Lincoln, a fairly unpolished diamond when she met him, belonged in the White House.
I hereby claim Abe Lincoln In Illinois as an Oregon film, based on the location shooting (Oregon standing in for Illinois).
